Skeptical Solutions. Provocations of Philosophy
The conference is co-organised by G. Anthony Bruno and Abby Rutherford. It brings together an international group of scholars who specialise in skepticism’s profound impact on and importance for the history of philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and language. It is open to the public.
Our conference title speaks to the concessions compelled by skepticism, while its subtitle evokes a double sense of “of”: the negative sense of the skeptical challenge to philosophy and the positive sense of philosophy’s rising to this challenge. We aim to explore the ways in which skepticism represents both an obstacle to and a catalyst for philosophical thinking – both the burden of excising dogma and the opportunity of being at one’s reflective best. Our hope is that the interaction of philosophers of diverse backgrounds will inspire new insights into the undermining strategies of skeptical positions, on the one hand, and the strongest responses to these strategies, on the other.
The conference sponsors include the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the International Centre for Philosophy at the University of Bonn.
