IRP Realism as a Philosophical Response to the Challenges of our Time: "Normative Dimensions of Realism
Realisms in philosophy, literature and the arts have always been understood as a call to stick to reality. Such a call seems to imply a specific set of self-obligations: Norms of sobriety and truthfulness in philosophy; stylistic norms in literature and the arts. Some realistic philosophies tend to consider reality itself as a tribunal for our claims to knowledge, and thus as an implicit normative authority. However, it remains unclear to what extent the respective norms are real and to what extent they are merely conventional. How can we know in what ways reality establishes norms for our artistic and philosophical endeavours? How can we make them explicit? This conference aims to explore these questions and important related topics.
